Hormone Therapy

Hormone Therapy, Category #1
Hormone Therapy
Evelyn Shoults titled this piece "Hormone Therapy." Set in a sterile kitchen bathed in whites and grays give the sense of a hospital-like room. The brighter colors pouring in from the window with the greenery and butterflies. It chronicles a single symptom of many from the aftermath of a thyroidectomy, the need for life long hormone replacements through medication. The iconology in this painting creates the narrative. The thyroid is the shape of a butterfly, the butterflies represent what is missing from the body. The butterfly chrysalis in the medication bottle is the hormone replacement needed for the body to function without a thyroid. The eating of the butterfly is the action of the beginning of a transformation to hope and a new life. The greenery entering through the window and taking over is the growth, renewal, and rebirth of life. The flowers are the link to healing of the body as they attract the butterflies. Each symbol together as a whole represents the beauty of transformation of the body into a life full of hope and healing.
