“Carrying Hope” is inspired by my journey with breast cancer. The figure represents a person that has had a cancer diagnosis and is in that time of the journey where there is acceptance. She carries an umbrella so that she is always prepared for stormy days. The pattern on the dress is made of swallowtail butterflies, which serve as symbols of transformation and rebirth. Shadow like figures in the right corner represent her loved ones that provide support in her journey. She carries a light that shines like a beacon for others. She is thinking of those individuals that may receive a cancer diagnosis in the future, so the lights that flicker behind her will leave a trail for others to follow. She wears a laurel wreath which signifies victory, because the spirit and soul will triumph over the physical limitations of cancer.
